Title:CHOIS in CHIPs - Global connections with Child Health Informatics and HPC
Abstract:
Dr. Radha Nandkumar will describe the power and potential of high performance computing and information technology and their impact on society at large. She will discuss some work in progress in Child Health Informatics Projects (CHIPs) that started out as a pilot project on Child Health and Obesity Informatics System (CHOIS) that she initiated as a multi-institutional inter-disciplinary collaborative activity. While obesity in children is a growing epidemic in the USA, in other parts of the world, and especially in impoverished societies and in developing countries, stunted growth and malnutrition are prevalent. She will outline the goal of these child health informatics projects for extending the infrastructure to include and improve the health and fitness surveillance of children around the world.
Mini Biography:
Dr. Radha Nandkumar is a well-recognized leader in high performance computing (HPC). She has been at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) since its inception. She is currently the Director of International and Campus Relations and is also a Senior Research Scientist at NCSA. She has initiated and fostered collaborations with sister institutions around the globe; these span more than a dozen countries from multiple continents and she serves on the advisory boards of multiple academic HPC institutions around the world. She is actively involved in several technical program committees, organization and chairing of international and national workshops and conferences on supercomputing, middleware and grid computing, women in computing and diversity in computing. Her research interests include HPC, grid computing, and their impact on society at large. She holds a Ph.D. in Physics from UIUC. She also has earned an Executive MBA, also from the University of Illinois.
