Climate Modelling With Web Services

The work flow involved two legacy Fortran codes: C-CAM, a global climate model, and DARLAM, a local model. Data manipulation and filtering between the two was provided by a component cc2lam. Communication between these components is normally by files. The GriddLes methodology used GridlFiles, which replaces the files by buffers, without the need to modify the legacy codes. This allows the reading and downstream processing to begin while the global model is still running, giving a noticable speedup to the performance. More details are available here.
